The FBI further stresses that the July 4th holiday has the most recorded car theft attempts in all the national holidays. This should serve as a warning to everyone who might be too preoccupied with the holiday festivities. Maine’s crime rate is on the rise This is one more thing that Maine residents should worry about, because just recently the FBI published a report that stated that their crime rate rose to 5.4 percent compared to the previous year. They cited the popular use of prescription drugs as one of the reasons that might have contributed to this trend. In a report published by Kennebec Journal, Portland Police Chief Michael Sauschuck stresses, “Anybody in law enforcement will tell you substance abuse issues drive crime statistics, both alcohol and drugs, while cocaine is still the major drug problem in southern Maine, prescription drugs just really blew through the entire state and are causing major, major problems for entire counties of folks,” he said.
